With the UFC, however, a lot of people have gotten the wrong idea about martial arts. A particular
martial art may be great to learn, but, though it works in the UFC, it
doesn't always mean that it will protect you out on the
Karate for example, teaches blocking and striking, which is great, and which may be of use in a street fight, but, has little to no emphasis on grappling techniques...where many street fights wind up.
Once your opponent is in close, and has his hands on you, Karate really doesn't help as much as when he's at arm's length. With some distance between you and your opponent, however, Karate can be a very devastating self defense technique, although someone truly knowledgeable in street fighting techniques could possibly beat the crap out of a Karate expert.
No matter whatever else you think of it, martial arts can be an important life skill to learn, if you learn it for the right
reasons. Each style will vary in technique and what it has to
offer, which is why you should pick the best style for your needs
and what you hope to accomplish. Martial arts can teach you a
lot about self defense and yourself - all
