Do you have high blood pressure?

Okay, I'll get the dumb remark out of the way first.

You don't want to get high blood pressure.

In fact, since there is such a risk of high blood pressure for many of us eventually, you probably want to know how YOU can NOT get high blood pressure.

So, the question is, "What can I do to lower my risk of high blood pressure?"

As it turns out, there are many very simple things you can do regularly to help control your blood pressure now and perhaps even prevent high blood pressure in the future.

It's really not that hard. You just need to realize that what you eat, how much you exercise, and other lifestyle choices can effect your blood pressure now and in the future.

If you visit your doctor regularly, you probably will have your blood pressure checked every time you do. This is a simple procedure that helps you and your healthcare provider monitor your pressure and be sure you don't have high blood pressure. Even taking note of an early trend in your blood pressure numbers can be of significant value in providing your doctor with a view of your overall health in general, and your blood pressure in particular.

This is a good thing, because when it comes to high blood pressure, waiting until you have it to do something about it just makes it harder to control.

Early monitoring of blood pressure before it becomes an issue, and your body may be too old to help as much, is one of the best things you can do to help lower blood pressure.

It's a simple fact that, with high blood pressure, and many other health issues, whether you have it yet or not, there are different reasons why people have high blood pressure...and different things you, and your healthcare provider, can do to help lower it.

High blood pressure damages your blood vessels, increasing your risk for stroke, heart disease, and kidney problems. In other words, high blood pressure is potentially very harmful to your health and you want to begin treating it, or preventing it, right away.

Something to keep in mind about early hypertension detection, diagnosis, and treatment, can prevent many age related illnesses and conditions while reducing the risks of early death... WAY too early death.

Rather than waiting until you have to take blood pressure medication, making simple, yet significant, lifestyle changes is usually the first choice when you want to lower your blood pressure.

However, if these simple changes do not help and you must use some kind of prescription blood pressure medication, continuing with as many healthy lifestyle choices as possible along with the medication is the best route. Sometimes, even the best lifestyle choices alone may just not be enough, but combining them with medication could help significantly.

BAD LIFESTYLE CHOICES

As with many health issues, if you currently use any tobacco of any kind, stop your use or decrease it significantly. Nicotine makes your blood vessels constrict, resulting in a faster heart beat. This faster heart beat raises your blood pressure and, over time, can actually lead to heart damage.

Stopping many of these bad habits can be difficult, but you can easily find products that help you quit smoking or help quit the use of other tobacco products.

ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES - MAYBE A SAFER ALTERNATIVE THAN TOBACCO

Many people who have trouble giving up the cigarette habit are having success with an electronic cigarette, also called an e-cigarette. An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a battery - powered device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine by way of a vaporized solution.

Electronic cigarettes, such as NicoCure, are healthier alternatives to tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.

BEING OVERWEIGHT INCREASES HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE RISK

If you are overweight you are at a higher risk of high blood pressure.

One thing you can do is start eating healthier. Managing weight, is an important step. Regular exercise is also very beneficial in lowering your blood pressure. Plan an exercise routine and track your progress. This will allow you to learn what is working for you and what is not.

Eat plenty of fruit and veggies and try a low fat diet. The glycemic index diet is a healthy eating plan which is great for losing weight and lowering blood pressure.

ALCOHOL AND OTHER BAD HABITS

Something you can do to lower your blood pressure is to avoid sodium, alcohol and caffeine altogether, or at least limit your intake. One good piece of news is that, despite all the bad press, sodium isn't harmful to everyone's blood pressure. Until you know for sure, however, it is better to assume that it is dangerous to YOU and take the necessary precautions.

Alcohol can cause high blood pressure in some people. While some studies have shown that alcohol has its health benefits, you should drink no more than one or two alcoholic beverages a day. If you find this is increasing your blood pressure, try to quit altogether. Your health might be at risk.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS

Stress, especially chronic stress, can sometimes affect your blood pressure. Stress, which has been identified as one of the most common risk factors for almost every disease, is very common and there are millions of ways to help reduce stress. Try some simple relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga, first. But, if none of these work talk to your doctor, who may have some better suggestions.

BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION

If all else fails you will almost certainly have to turn to some form of blood pressure medication. There are many excellent types of blood pressure medicine to help you lower your blood pressure. You may end up taking this medicine for the rest of your life but if it helps keep you healthy, it is worth it.

However, most blood pressure medications have a wide range of side effects which create their own problems. It is better to control your blood pressure using lifestyle choices if at all possible.

If you are in any way unsure of how to keep your blood pressure under control, talking with your doctor is the best solution. Tell the doctor of your concerns and don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. No question is stupid. or out of bounds, when it comes to your health. You can even do some research online and find out many more things about lowering blood pressure.

After all, you are not the only one who wants to learn more about remaining healthy.

Whatever the situation and whatever your goals, take the necessary steps to lower your blood pressure in order to live a long healthy life.
