HOW POPULAR WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS WORK
|
Many people take weight loss products without understanding how and why they work.
However, the fact is that being overweight can be the result of many different causes, sometimes even a combination of them. Simply choosing one weight loss product might not be the answer, especially if it does not address your particular situation.
If you don't match the weight loss product to your needs, you might be wasting a lot of money and time, and wind up disappointed and frustrated.
With that in mind, here's how many of the most popular weight loss products work.
Acai Berry
Source: The acai berry has been harvested for hundred of years in Brazil, where it is prized for its rejuvenating and detoxifying properties.
How it Works: Increases energy levels and provides high doses of antioxidants for health.
Research: Acai berry weight loss products help with maintaining energy levels, which, in turn, helps with weight loss through increased activity. Works especially well in conjuntion with a good exercise program and proper nutrition.
African Mango
Source: African mango, or bush mango, differs from other mango fruits in that it produces a peculiar seed, which natives of Cameroon refer to as "Dikka nuts." For hundreds of years, an extract from the seeds, called irvingia gabonensis, has been used among Cameroon villagers for its wide-ranging medicinal benefits.
How it Works: Increases energy levels and promotes increased metabolism.
Research: In a study conducted on 102 people split between those taking the African Mango and those taking a placebo, results showed that taking African Mango resulted in “Significant improvements in body weight, body fat, and waist circumference. African Mango (Irvingia gabonensis) taken as 150 mg twice daily, before meals, to overweight and/or obese human volunteers lowered body weight and positively affected a variety of characteristics of the metabolic syndrome.
Garcinia Cambogia
Source: The supplement is extracted from the rind of the Garcinia Cambogia fruit (a small pumpkin shaped fruit sometimes called a tamarind) and has been in use for a long time.
How it Works: Garcinia Cambogia suppresses appetite and inhibits fat production.
Research: Studies showed an more weight loss, up 2 to 3 times more than those not taking any Garcinia Cambogia Extract, which resulted in up to 10 pounds or more per month without any change in diet or exercise. Recommended by Dr. Oz.
Goji Berry
Source: The Goji berry, native to southeastern Europe and Asia, has long been a staple of those who practice Eastern and holistic health.
How it Works: The Goji berry increases energy, improves circulation, and strengthens the immune system.
Research: Not much formal research, but is very popular with many celebrities and entertainment personalities.
Green Coffee Bean
Source: Green coffee beans are simply those which have not yet been roasted. The high temperatures of roasting causes up to 90% loss of health and weight loss function.
How it Works: Green coffee beans contain fat-burning and antioxidant substances.
Research: The results of one study were presented at the American Chemical Society's spring national meeting in San Diego. In this study, 16 overweight young adults took, by turns, a low dose of green coffee bean extract, a high dose of the same green coffee supplement, and a placebo. In this small study, subjects taking the full dose of the green coffee extract lost an average of 17.5 pounds in 22 weeks and reduced their overall body weight by 10.5%!
Hoodia Gordonii
Source: Hoodia is a small, succulent plant that grows only in the remote region of the South African Kalahari Desert.
How it Works: The Hoodia Gordonii is essentially an appetite suppressant. Indigenous San bushmen have eaten the Hoodia Gordonii plant for centuries, to stave off hunger during their long and arduous hunting trips. This small plant looks like a dill pickle with spines on it.
Research: There is little formal research on Hoodia, but lots of anecdotal (word of mouth) testimony as to its effectiveness. True Hoodia Gordonii only grows in a particular region of South Africa. Real products will include a Convention in International Trade of Endangered Species (C.I.T.E.S.) Certificate, and a Protected Plant Permit which is issued by the South African government authorizing shipment out of country to only a few authorized buyers.
Raspberry Ketones
Source: An enzyme contained in the raspberry fruit, though in such small volumes that a huge number of raspberries would have to be eaten each day for an effective weight loss result. However, supplements are made which contain large quantities of raspberry ketones, usually in pill form.
How it Works: Increases metabolism, increases fat oxidation, increases energy, and helps fight fatigue.
Research: Not too much human research, but in studies on rats, Raspberry Ketones helped prevent the onset of obesity in mice that were on a high fat diet. They also prevented an increase in blood triglyceride following high fat meals. Recommended by Dr. Oz.
Resveratrol
Source: Resveratrol is found in the skins of certain fruits, such as grapes, blueberries and cranberries. Many prefer to get the substance from red wine, but it is also available in supplement form.
How it Works: Enhances cell function, boosts energy, reduces carbohydrate utilization, increases metabolism, and helps burn fat.
Research: Resveratrol supplements are better for weight loss than other sources because of the almost zero number of calories in foods containing the substance. Studies have also shown that in addition to the benefits outlined above, resveratrol also has beneficial antioxidant properties. Harvard University released a study a while back which demonstrated many of the health benefits of resveratrol.
Picking the right weight loss supplement is important to getting the best weight loss results. However, most weight loss products are most effective when used with a regular exercise program and proper nutrition.
