Donovan Baldwin has been writing and publishing his original poetry for over 40 years. He has collected many of his smaller, romantic and daring poems on this site.

THIS DARK FIRE

I know well,
This dark fire of which
Rostand did speak.
It burns without burning, flames
Dancing to a music only certain
Mad poets hear, blinded by
The dark dark fire
Which burns so high
Warming body and soul
To blazing fevers that signal
A special kind of illness,
That never quite ends,
And can never be healed
On earth.

SHYLY UNBUTTONS

shyly unbuttons
words restraining her desires
revealing herself

SHAME THE PHOENIX

tongues of fire we soar
embers bursting into flames
which shame the phoenix

PROGENITORS OF POETRY

Speak to me with ocean waves,
As the wind to sing for me,
Take me back to boyhood
In the woods beside the bay,
Climb those trees once more,
Contemplating in boyish ways,
The rhythm and adventure of
Life and the endless sea,
Progenitors of poetry,
And the future poet.

I AM THE POET

I am the poet,
My words, foolish, infantile,
Wise, dripping with philosophy,
Beating themselves, like trapped birds,
Against my fingers, tap, tap, tap,
Outward musting, lusting,
A flight of birds, a herd, a gam,
A pod, a murder, a flock,
Demanding their release
As all wild creatures do.
