Each Day's Lazarus - The King's Men In Pursuit - The Blank Pages - The Older Woman - What Comes Next
Fort Worth Poet, Donovan Baldwin

Donovan Baldwin has been writing and publishing his original poetry for over 40 years. He has collected many of his smaller, romantic and daring poems on this site.

EACH DAY'S LAZARUS

I am arisen from
Tiny nighttime deaths,
Each day's Lazarus
, Temporarily renewed,
Sleep and waking both
Miracles on their own,
Not to be scoffed at,
Nor lightly treated,
Nor abused for
Even miracles are
Sensitive to disrespect,
And are only of
A limited number.

THE KING'S MEN IN PURSUIT

Never smelled heather or a moor,
Those shadowy things that
Are the background to
Mysteries and murders,
And highwaymen and heroes
Escaping from the king's men,
And yet, in the morning in
A small park in Texas
Near the stream I smell...
Something...
Heather? Moor?
Don't know. Never smelled them,
But, suddenly, there I am,
The king's men in pursuit.

THE BLANK PAGES

Life's about stories,
We're told, but I,
Questioning poet,
Think about,
The blank pages,
Forgotten dialogue,
Undeveloped plots,
Indistinct characters,
We and the world create...
And leave behind.

THE OLDER WORAN

Yes, she was a rough one,
Kisses deeply flavored, hints
Of cigarettes and whiskey,
An embrace that spoke of
Past and future sins,
Life to be lived where
Boundaries of pleasure
Were knocked off their pins,
And innocent young men
Were welcomed in,
Initiated properly in the
Ancient arts of love.

WHAT COMES NEXT

Funny how things
Can be the same,
But different.
Amber light of dawn
And...
Amber light of dusk
Look alike in photos,
But...
When you're there,
Experiencing,
Seeing with your own eyes,
One's a promise of newness,
Possible excitement,
Arousing adventure,
You can't help but
Look forward to.
With interest and desire.
The amber light of dusk,
On the other hand,
Soothes,
Promising peace,
You can't help but
Look forward to
What comes next,
And then...
The moon appears,
Through alchemy
Replacing gold with silver,
And you don't feel
You've lost anything,
And...
You can't help but
Look forward to
What comes next.
