What is
Neuro Linguistic Programming?
There has long
been a belief among those who study success and motivation that there
is a definite link between what we say, what we believe, and what we
are...or become. Recent studies have shown that this link
does exist and that "what we say" can be in the form of thoughts as
well as the spoken word. Additionally, these thoughts and
words can be spoken by us, to ourselves.
Just as good advice to a friend can change the course of their life or
alter their beliefs about the world, or themselves, what we say to us
can do the same.
This is the basis of Neuro Linquistic Programming, or NLP, as it is
often called.
Many motivational experts and professional life coaches, such as
bodybuilder Tom Venuto, and success coach, Anthony Robbins, rely
heavily on the tenets of NLP to help their readers and listeners
achieve success in their own lives.
The study of neuro linguistic programming has also been studied by
therapists who use it to establish a rapport with their patients or
clients. "Efficiency experts" use NLP to help improve both
workplace relations as well as work performance itself.
Additionally, both employers and potential employees have turned to NLP
to improve their respective chances of finding, or being, the right
individual for the available jobs.
Considering the power that knowing, or effectively using, neuro
linguistic programming puts in the hands of the individual, it is not
surprising that an entire industry of neuro linguistic programmers has
arisen. While formal courses exist, many simply learn from
easy obtainable and available resources such as NLP
For Dummies
, and Success with NLP, both easily
available online.
While I learned about NLP years ago, my own personal interest in health
and fitness led me to the work of Tom Venuto, author of "Burn
the Fat
Feed the Muscle", who also relies on the ideas of NLP to help
provide
much of the motivational aspect of his weight loss program.
