Remembering to Take Your Blood Pressure Medications

Here are a few tips that might help you remember because it is very important you do not forget to take your blood pressure medication.

If you are looking for the information on the following:
Are you currently taking medicine for your blood pressure?

I do. I take Bactrim and Exforge.

Do you take other medication as well?

I do...and supplements too.

You and I both know that remembering to take any medicine regularly can be a hassle to some people; especially if we have to take more than one medication at a time.

Here are a few tips that might help you remember because it is very important you do not forget to take your blood pressure medication.

Some people have found that purchasing little pill boxes can help you organize your pills and keep track of your schedule. You can purchase pill boxes that have a compartment for every day of the week. You put all the pills you need to take into each box for each day. You can purchase these almost anywhere and they do come in handy for those that are forgetful.

I have even recently seen a little "calendar" that fastens to the side of a pill bottle.  You flip over a tab each time you take a dose.

If you take medicine regularly you might try keeping it on your bathroom sink. When you finish getting ready or even just brushing your teeth, you can take your medicine. Have your blood pressure medicine and any other medication that you have to take right there. This is a great easy reminder.

However, recent research has shown that some pills absorb more moisture in rooms like the bathroom and kitchen, and this makes them a bit less effective. You are more likely to encounter this in some daily multivitamins and supplements, but you might want to do a little research and find out if your medication's effectiveness will be diminished by exposure to moisture.

Another tip is to establish a routine.

Taking your blood pressure pills at the same time every day will eventually get you in the habit and you won't forget. If you have to take your medicine with food you could always take them every day with your lunch. Getting in the habit of this is a great way to never forget your blood pressure pills again.

There are many people who simply stick notes everywhere to remind them to do something.

Remembering to take your blood pressure medicine is no different.

Put up a note on your fridge or on your computer at work. Every other day, or perhaps every week, change the color of the note and place it in a different spot; on the phone, the mirror, the fridge, wherever you will be most likely to see it. The same note in the same spot day-after-day tends to become invisible.

My wife has a trick for remembering to take her medication that works for her.

She has no problem remembering to take her morning dose of one medicine, but had a problem remembering whether or not she took the second dose that evening. She got a small container, and, when she got her morning dose, put the evening pill in the container. That way, she knew at a glance whether or not she had taken the second dose!

A really great way some use to remember to take their blood pressure medicine is with their own little personal chart. You might try using different color pens or pencils if you have different medications to take. This is a very neat and organized way to keep track and to help you remember.

If none of these seem to work for you, you might try having a friend or relative give you a quick call during the day to remind you. While this might sound effective, even it may not work as well for some as for others. If you take your blood pressure medicine while you are on the phone with them it can be very helpful. If they just call to tell you and then you hang up, you might forget in that time.

I have ADHD, and remembering to do something after I hang up is a bit of a challenge.  Heck, I quit taking my ADHD medicine because I had so many other things to remember!  Good news is that I did find that a B-12 supplement works almost as well for me as Adderall. However, I have to remember to take it as well!

If you have a computer and are savvy enough you could set up a reminder using one of the programs that comes with most computeres these days. You can also find free services that will do this for you and send you a reminder email. Have it tell you to take your blood pressure and have it repeat until you have taken it and then delete it. Make it do this daily and you will remember to take your blood pressure medicine.

If you do not have something on your computer which will work, you can find and download free reminder software at http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/.

With a little thought, you can probably come up with your own creative ways of remembering to take your blood pressure medication. Try a few different ways and see what works best for you.

Once you get into a routine of taking your blood pressure medication, you shouldn't have a problem remembering to take it.
