WHAT DO VITAMINS AND MINERALS DO FOR ME?
|
I'm sure you would agree that in order for your body to function well, it is important that you take care of it.
If we view your body as a fine piece of machinery, this means regular check-ups, tune-ups, and use of the proper fuels and lubricants. It means that all parts must work together, with each component doing its job as best as possible and in coordination with all other parts. It means that noxious and destructive residues must be removed and counteracted, and that all parts must be maintained so that they are in tip top condition.
NICE, BUT WHAT DO VITAMINS AND MINERALS DO FOR ME?
While no single vitamin or mineral does all things for your body, together, and taken regularly in the proper amounts, that long paragraph up there is a loose description of the functions of vitamins and minerals.
Certainly, there are other substances necessary to health which are not vitamins and minerals; air, water, protein, fats, and carbohydrates, just to name a few. Without these we would die.
Without vitamins and minerals, we would also die, just in a different manner...and probably over a longer time.
One additional point: many vitamins and minerals have a single, or singular purpose. However, many of these vital substances do their best work in combination with others. For example, Vitamin D and calcium, calcium and magnesium, just to name a couple of examples.
And, as you might expect, they are going to do their best work when you are doing everything else that you can for the health and wellness of your body.
Most vitamins and minerals are, as many agencies point out, available from the foods we eat, and choosing a well-balanced diet will supply them. However, this is complicated by many issues. For example, for most of us living in the modern world, we do not get enough exercise and eat foods high in fats or empty carbohydrates.
Obesity is already a problem for children and adults, and to add the foods we should be eating to what we already consume would just make the problem worse. On the other hand, changing our diet and eating habits so that we only eat the foods we should be eating is going to be a major task...even if family, friends, and life in general were to cut us some slack and let us eat...well...weird.
While cutting back on foods we should NOT be eating and adding foods we SHOULD be eating is an important step towards getting the vitamins and minerals we need, taking a good daily multivitamin will go a long way towards making up any vitamin or mineral deficiency without adding excess calories as well.
