Is Trying to Lose Weight Wrong?
By Donovan Baldwin

In his book, "BiomarkersBiomarkers: The 10 Keys to Prolonging Vitality", Dr. William Evans says, "Losing weight is the wrong goal. You should forget about your weight and instead concentrate on shedding fat and gaining muscle!”

In "Natural Hormonal Enhancement", author Rob Faigin says, "Weight is largely meaningless as an index of fitness, health, physical attractiveness, or practically anything else related to human beings."

In "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle", champion natural bodybuilder and fitness coach Tom Venuto says, "The problem with the scale is that it doesn’t tell you how much of your weight is fat and how much is muscle."

So, what exacly are these three leading health experts trying to tell us?

Well, just listen to the things that you, and others, often say and compare those statements to the statements above.

"I am overweight."

"I wish I weighed less."

"I weigh too much."

"I want to lose weight."

Several years ago, before she became a pillar of her community, my sister sent me a birthday card.  On the outside it said, "Do want to know how to lose 10 ugly pounds?"  On the inside it said, "Cut off your head!"

People who simply target trying to "lose weight" without caring whether they are losing fat or losing muscle, which could help them lose fat, might as well just cut something off and be done with it!

People do this.  After all, what does liposuction do?  It strips away fat, causing the person to weigh less for a while.  However, in a short time, they will regain the weight unless they change the way they act.

It's pretty much the same with stomach bypass surgery.  If the person does not change the way they act, they may lose a lot of weight up front, but they will probably gain a lot of it back, and may have some major health issues to boot!

Many experts, including those mentioned above, will tell you that your goal should be to actually get rid of FAT, not just any old tissue.  They can also explain to you how to burn fat and build muscle.

By the way, you should not be afraid to build muscle, especially you ladies.  You will not wind up looking like some freak.  The muscle you gain through proper nutrition and exercise will replace the fat you burn...and take up a lot less space.  It will also help you burn more fat and keep it off.

The female bodybuilders who look so masculine do so due to an extremely rigourous exercise routine and very specific regimens of nutrition and supplementation.  The average woman who is exercising to burn fat is not going to wind up looking like that.

When people concentrate specifically on losing weight, they make poor decisions not only concerning weight loss itself, but about their health as well.  A simple program of proper nutrition and regular exercise will do the trick.  Of course, simply taking an occasional walk and cutting out diet sodas is probably not going to be enough, but knowing exactly what to do to burn fat most effectively is going to take some study and some effort and some motivation.

For several years, one of my favorite resources for all three has been "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle", by Tom Venuto, which many consider to be the best weight loss book around.  In addition to several chapters devoted to the subject in the title, Tom's opening section in which he instructs you how to become motivated enough to achieve your goals and stay that way is invaluable.  It is unfortunate that many will never have a copy of his book because it is not in print.  The good news, however, is that it can be downloaded in minutes and stored on a computer in ebook form.

If you are ready to stop trying to lose weight and learn how to burn fat, build muscle and become a leaner, fitter, healthier person, I recommend you start with Tom Venuto's book.
