It was in 1905 that Dr. William Fletcher figured out that, if certain nutrients were removed from food, various unhealthy conditions occurred.

Over the following few decades, various researchers were not only able to identify many of these nutrients, but they were also able to link the presence or absence of these compounds to presence or absence of specific health conditions.

As vitamins were being identified and studied, researchers became aware that many minerals available in foods were also valuable for health. Even today, although most vitamins and dietary minerals have been identified, researchers are continuing to find new links between these substances and health. In fact, even more substances, such as phytonutrients, have also been identified and being researched.

While the answer to the question of how vitamins and minerals can help the body is known, the answer can be difficult to define as each vitamin, mineral, and other nutrients can have quite different effects on health.

In addition to each vitamin and mineral helping with specific functions of the body, often it is the interaction between these substances which is probably as important as the effects themselves. For example, while the mineral, iron, is important to health in its own right, vitamin B12 helps the body make use of that mineral.

While calcium is important to bone health and the prevention of conditions such as osteoporosis, Vitamin D helps the body more effectively use the mineral.

So, when it comes to asking, "How do vitamins and minerals help the body?", the answers are there, but they are varied and not easily condensed into one simple answer.
