How to Strengthen Your Immune System
Basically, your
immune system has the job of protecting you against disease causing
microorganisms.
It is an efficient and powerful system...when it is kept at peak level
and allowed to function at optimum ability.
Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle, diet, and environment can all
serve to weaken our immune system even faster than Mother Nature does,
and she's had millenia of experience and is pretty good at it
herself. Put her and all the other things which contribute to
a declining ability in our immune systems to keep us healthy, and you
have a recipe for health disaster.
It's not just that some common infection which a healthy immune system
might have prevented is not good for us, but a constant lifestyle of
unnecessary illness can not only weaken us and make life less
enjoyable, but can actually shorten our lives.
However, are we doomed to slide rapidly into ill health and premature
aging, or are there things we can do to reverse or prevent the process
and create healthy immune systems which can help us live long and
healthy lives?
Well, yes. It IS possible.
Unfortunately, did you check out that word that keeps popping up...to
wit, "system"?
That word implies a combination of inputs that no single action will be
effective to accomplish.
While any single step can be of value, you can help strengthen your
immune system through a combination of regular exercise, proper rest,
appropriate nutrition, and perhaps with the help of certain herbal and
nutritional
supplements, but there must be a balance. That is
one reason why so many disciplines such as yoga, meditation, and
tai
chi can be of benefit when it comes to improving your immune
system. They balance the mental and physical aspects of life.
Here are some things you can do to help improve your immune system.
If you smoke, quit. If
you don’t smoke...good.
Make sure your
diet is high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in
saturated fat.
Get regular
exercise, control your weight, and get adequate rest.
Control your
blood pressure.
If you drink
alcohol, drink in moderation.
Wash your hands
regularly.
Get regular
medical checkups.
Some of the priority nutrients for strengthening your immune system are:
Vitamin A in the form of beta carotene, vitamins C, E, B6, B12 and
folic acid. Mineral support for a strong immune system
includes copper, selenium, and zinc.
